Power Generation Gas Turbine Business

AMK’s growth during recent years is largely attributable to the addition of electron beam (EB) welding and heat treatment capabilities, as well as the business’ expansion into power-generation equipment manufacturing. AMK’s first EB welding equipment was purchased in 1998, and several more sophisticated EB machines have been added since 2001 to address growing demand. A specialized VAC AERO vacuum brazing and heat treat furnace was acquired in 2002 and a second VAC AERO unit will be put in service in mid-2005.

The investment in additional EB and heat treat equipment gave General Electric Energy the confidence to commit increased amounts of critical work to AMK, including development and production work on the first GE “9H” gas turbine, which was installed at Baglan Bay Power Station in South Wales.

“We could not have completed this project without the effort of the team from AMK,” said a senior manager within GE Energy. “It is well understood throughout GE Energy how critical AMK was to the success of this project.”

By using cutting edge materials and an innovative steam cooling system, the GE Energy’s H System can operate at inlet temperatures of 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit. AMK’s unique welding expertise and services make it possible to fabricate the types of metals needed to withstand such extreme temperatures.
